4 Rohingyas, 2 infants arrested in Agartala; complaint filed

Four Rohingyas and two infants who had illegally entered India were arrested in Agartala on Friday, according to the police

The incident happened a week after 15 Rohingya refugees was arrested in separate instances in various districts of Tripura.

Issuing a statement, assistant inspector general (law and order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said, “A specific case was registered against them for further legal action at Agartala GRP police station.”

Detainees were apprehended by Agartala Government Railway Police (GRP) from Badharghat railway station after they crossed the India-Bangladesh border fence and entered the Dhanpur region within the jurisdiction of Jatrapur police station in the Sepahijala district.

Mohammad Safikul Islam (55), Mohammad Abdul Kayer (23), Senwara Begam (19) and her one-year-old child, and Nur Kayeda (19) and her 16-month-old child have been named as the arrested individuals.

When questioned, it emerged that the majority of them were from the Kutupalong Rohingya Refugee Camp in Cox Bazaar on Bangladesh’s southeast coast, while Nur Kayeda was from Chittagong.

Bangladesh and Tripura are connected by an 856-kilometer international border. A significant portion of the Indo-Bangla border runs through the Sepahijala neighborhood.
