Savita Kanswal becomes the first woman from India to successfully summit both Mount Everest and Mount Makalu in 16 days

A 26- year old girl from Lonthru Village, Uttrakhand, Savita Kanswal, became the first women in India  to climb Mt. Everest and Mt. Makalu in just 16 days.

It all began when she had got enrolled in a 10 days adventure foundation course where she discovered her inclination towards mountaineering. She started her course at Nehru Mountaineering Institute (NMI), uttrakashi.

Kanswal says, “Though it was an introductory course, my interest and passion for the mountains started here. I wanted to take my mountaineering skills to the next level, but my financial condition was blocking it. To pursue further courses, I started working in a private company to collect some money and proceed toward achieving my dream of climbing Mt. Everest.”

She left her job in 2016 to pursue her dreams and finished her professional mountaineering training. She has  currently started working at NMI as a guest trainer.

Everest: reaching life’s summit, On May 12, 2022, she successfully ascended Mt. Everest (8848 m) with perseverance, enthusiasm, and hard effort. On May 28, 2022, she ascended Mt. Makalu (8485 m) on the 16th day. Even she managed to ascend Mount Lhotse, becoming the second woman in India and the first from Uttarakhand to do so.

The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs jointly sponsored the Everest Massif, which was scheduled for 2021. She has finished 12 expeditions so far, and she’s aiming to finish more.

She said, “I want to climb all the peaks over 8000 metres in the world, especially the highest summits on the seven continents. I’m going to climb Mt. Cho Oyu (8188 m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167 m) right now.”
