Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir has reached Delhi for significant discussions with the central government. This visit follows the passing of a resolution by his cabinet, urging the Union government to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This resolution was passed during the first meeting of the newly formed government after the recent elections, where the National Conference-Congress alliance secured a majority, with Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister.

During his stay, Abdullah is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally present the statehood resolution. He is also scheduled to meet Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss this and other pressing issues related to Jammu and Kashmir’s governance. The resolution emphasises the restoration of statehood, a significant demand from many political parties in the region following the 2019 revocation of the state’s special status and its reorganisation into two Union Territories.

Interestingly, the move has sparked debate, with some criticising Abdullah for focusing solely on statehood and not addressing the restoration of Article 370, which was one of the key demands in his party’s election campaign. This development is being closely watched, as it comes amid ongoing Supreme Court proceedings related to the region’s political status.
