Obama’s Powerful Endorsement

Former US President Barack Obama took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to rally support for Kamala Harris in her late bid for the presidency. Amid thunderous applause, Obama, the first Black American elected to the White House, delivered a stirring speech, praising President Joe Biden and emphasizing the importance of electing Harris. “We are ready for a President Kamala Harris,” he declared, urging voters to “fight for an America we can believe in”. He said that “Donald Trump sees power as nothing more than a means to his own ends.”

Michelle Obama’s Resonant Message

Before Obama’s address, his wife Michelle Obama received a warm welcome from the crowd. She passionately endorsed Harris and her running mate saying “Hope is making a comeback,” Tim Walz, calling for a rejection of fear and division. Michelle Obama also criticized former President Donald Trump, warning that he would try to distort Harris’s message, just as he had tried to instill fear during his presidency. Her speech resonated with the audience, drawing both applause and laughter as she quipped about Trump’s narrow worldview.

Republican Defections Highlighted

The convention also featured speeches from Republicans who have distanced themselves from Trump, including former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham and ex-Trump voter Kyle Sweetser. Their appearances underscored the broader appeal of the Harris-Walz ticket and the growing discontent with Trump’s leadership among some former supporters.

As the election approaches, Obama’s endorsement adds significant weight to Harris’s campaign, marking a pivotal moment in her pursuit to become the first woman, and the first person of Black and South Asian descent, to hold the presidency.
