Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United States on Sunday to participate in the UN General Assembly, calling on international partners to work towards “a shared victory for a truly just peace.” He emphasized the significance of the upcoming fall in determining the future of the war.
During an unannounced visit to a munitions plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania, President Zelenskyy highlighted the ramp-up in production of essential 155-millimeter artillery shells, which are vital for Ukraine’s military efforts. “It is in places like this where you can truly feel that the democratic world can prevail,” he stated alongside images of him thanking plant workers.
Zelenskiy’s urgency regarding munitions shortages has intensified as Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter. In a video address from his plane, he mentioned Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to secure weapons and diplomatic support to pressure Russia into peace negotiations.
After visiting Pennsylvania, Zelenskyy flew to New York, where he is scheduled to meet with US business leaders to discuss Ukraine’s energy requirements, as well as engage with various heads of state and international organizations.
His visit aligns with US preparations for a significant $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking a shift from recent smaller assistance offerings. Zelenskyy plans to present a “victory plan” to President Biden and discuss it with Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, along with other world leaders.
Zelenskyy also hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has criticized US aid to Ukraine. Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with Zelenskyy during the week, though no specific date has been set.
US officials have indicated that the forthcoming aid package may include patrol boats, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), as well as 155- and 105-millimeter artillery rounds. The final details of the package are expected to be confirmed ahead of Biden’s anticipated approval.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to address a UN summit on Monday, participate in Security Council discussions on Ukraine on Tuesday, and speak during the General Assembly on Wednesday.
