Russian Strikes Hit Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia, One Dead

Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine — Sept 23 — Russian forces have carried out a series of strikes on the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, resulting in one death and several injuries, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

Recent Attack Casualties

On Monday evening, Fedorov reported that a new strike killed one person and injured five, including a 13-year-old girl. Earlier in the day, another missile strike on critical infrastructure injured at least two people. These latest attacks come after prior strikes over the weekend that wounded 21 and damaged multiple residential and educational buildings.

Destruction and Damage

The governor noted that the recent attacks destroyed two homes and caused damage to city infrastructure, igniting a fire that was quickly controlled by emergency services. While the type of weapons used in these strikes is still unclear, Fedorov mentioned that Russian forces likely deployed guided aerial bombs during the earlier airstrikes.

Emergency Response Efforts

Ukraine’s emergency services shared footage showing rescuers working to clear debris and assist injured individuals outside a damaged apartment building. This ongoing violence adds to the already high toll of casualties since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with thousands reported killed or injured.

Air Defense Actions

Overnight, Russia launched two guided air missiles and four attack drones targeting various regions in Ukraine. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted two missiles and shot down one drone over the northeastern Sumy region, further highlighting the ongoing conflict’s intensity.
