Protests Erupt At Australian Defense Expo: Dozens Arrested Amid Clashes

Protesters Target Police and Expo Attendees

Dozens of protesters were arrested following violent clashes with police at a major defense expo in Melbourne, Australia, on Wednesday. The demonstration, involving around 1,200 people, sought to block attendees from entering the Land Forces international exposition, a three-day event showcasing military equipment and weapons. Protesters set fire to bins, threw horse manure, rocks, and fruit at police, prompting officers to respond with pepper spray. Victoria Police confirmed that 33 people were arrested for various offenses, including assault and arson.

Public Outcry Over Arms Industry Profits

The protests reflect growing public anger towards the arms industry amid escalating global conflicts. Many demonstrators, waving Palestinian flags and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans, demanded an end to violent conflict and accused the expo of glorifying war and genocide. Disrupt Land Forces, the organization behind the protests, called for an end to funding states engaged in “genocide and militarized repression,” specifically mentioning Israel.

Political Reactions and Public Safety Concerns

Victoria state premier Jacinta Allan condemned the violence, emphasizing the importance of respecting police officers who are maintaining public safety. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for peaceful protests. Meanwhile, some local politicians, including Victorian Greens member Gabrielle de Vietri, voiced support for the protesters and criticized the state government for hosting the expo, calling it a “display of war machines.” The protests led to significant traffic disruptions in downtown Melbourne, with police closing several major roads.
