PM Modi’s Visit To Brunei: A Glimpse Inside The World’s Largest Palace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making headlines as he embarks on a two-day visit to Brunei, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to the Southeast Asian nation. During this landmark visit, Modi will meet with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at his opulent residence, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace- the world’s largest palace.

A Glimpse into the Palace

Situated near Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace is renowned for its grandeur, holding the title of the world’s largest residential palace. Spanning an impressive 200,000 square meters, the palace is a testament to luxury and architectural marvel.

Palatial Features

Commissioned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1981 and completed in 1984, the palace was built at a cost of approximately $1.4 billion. Designed by Filipino architect Leonardo Locsin, the palace features 1,788 rooms, including 257 bathrooms, and 44 staircases crafted from 38 types of marble. The grand banquet hall can accommodate up to 5,000 guests, and the palace also offers parking for 110 cars, an air-conditioned stable for 200 polo ponies, five swimming pools, and a mosque that serves 1,500 worshippers.

Architectural Elegance

The palace’s design merges Brunei’s Islamic culture with Malay traditions, showcasing a grand white facade adorned with golden domes. The central dome is decorated with 22-carat gold, and the opulent interior, designed by Khuan Chew—also known for Dubai’s Burj Al Arab—features lavish gold and marble finishes.

Historical Significance

While Istana Nurul Iman holds the record for the largest residential palace, it is not the priciest. Buckingham Palace in London tops the list of the most expensive palaces, valued at approximately $2.9 billion.

Noteworthy Events

The palace has previously hosted high-profile events, including the 28th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which was held virtually from this grand setting.

As Prime Minister Modi’s visit unfolds, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace remains a symbol of Brunei’s rich heritage and luxurious lifestyle.
