Punjab police have filed three new cases against Pakistan’s former prime minister, Imran Khan, following a protest held by his party at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh area, as per his call.
On Sunday, Khan, along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, was charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act, according to The Express Tribune. Complaints from Rawalpindi’s New Town and Civil Lines police stations also included charges of attempted murder, Section 144 violations, and other terrorism-related offenses.
The charges allege that the 71-year-old leader, while imprisoned in Adiala Jail, encouraged his supporters to protest against national institutions. The Punjab government further accused Khan and his supporters of vandalism, violence, and criticizing national institutions.
During Saturday’s protest, PTI supporters clashed with police, attempting to reach Liaquat Bagh despite roadblocks and barricades. Videos showed protesters hurling stones and bricks at the police, who retreated under pressure.
Earlier, Khan had called for a “peaceful protest,” but the provincial government imposed a ban on public gatherings and blocked major roads leading to the city. The protest venue was located just a few kilometers from the General Headquarters of the army.
After the clashes, the PTI called off the protest to prevent further escalation. Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 5, 2023, following his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case.
