NASA astronaut Jonny Kim is set to embark on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2025. Joining the Expedition 72/73 crew, Kim will be a flight engineer aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft. This eight-month mission will involve critical scientific studies and technological demonstrations aimed at advancing human space exploration and improving life on Earth.
A Vital Role in ISS Operations
Kim’s responsibilities on the ISS will be crucial, as he and his fellow crew members, Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, will work to ensure the station’s ongoing operations and research. This mission is part of NASA’s broader efforts to prepare for future space exploration, including missions beyond low Earth orbit.
Jonny Kim’s Remarkable Journey to Space
Kim’s path to becoming an astronaut is nothing short of extraordinary. Born to Korean-American parents and raised in Los Angeles, California, he joined the U.S. Navy right after graduating from Santa Monica High School in 2002. Over his military career, Kim completed over 100 combat missions as a Navy SEAL during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He earned numerous accolades, including the Silver Star Medal and the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” among others.
After his military service, Kim pursued higher education, earning a degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego. He then went on to graduate from Harvard Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. His extensive training as a Naval Flight Surgeon and a Naval Aviator further solidified his expertise in both medicine and aviation.
NASA Career and Preparation for ISS Mission
Kim was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 2017 and underwent rigorous training that included mastering ISS systems, T-38 flight training, robotics, and Extravehicular Activity (EVA) operations. He also became proficient in Russian to collaborate effectively with international colleagues on the ISS.
Before his upcoming mission, Kim served as a key member of NASA’s mission and crew operations. During Expedition 65 in 2021, he was the lead operations officer, playing a pivotal role in managing the activities of the ISS.
Personal Life and Achievements
Despite his professional accomplishments, Kim remains dedicated to his family. He is a loving husband and father of three, enjoying outdoor activities, fitness, video games, and learning new skills. Academically, he has been recognized as a Tillman Scholar by the Pat Tillman Foundation and graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Diego.
Looking Ahead
As Jonny Kim prepares to join Sunita Williams and the Expedition 72/73 crew on the ISS, his journey serves as an inspiring example of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. His multifaceted background in military service, medicine, and space exploration uniquely positions him to contribute significantly to this historic mission.
