After his military service, Kim pursued higher education, earning a degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego. He then went on to graduate from Harvard Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. His extensive training as a Naval Flight Surgeon and a Naval Aviator further solidified his expertise in both medicine and aviation.

Kim was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 2017 and underwent rigorous training that included mastering ISS systems, T-38 flight training, robotics, and Extravehicular Activity (EVA) operations.
