Labour MP Jas Athwal Faces Backlash For Moldy Flats And Eviction Claims

British-Indian Labour MP Jas Athwal has issued a public apology following a BBC investigation that exposed substandard living conditions in several flats he rents out. The probe revealed issues such as toxic black mould and malfunctioning fire alarms in properties managed by Athwal, who is the largest landlord among Members of Parliament, owning 15 rental properties.

Athwal, who represents Ilford South, expressed “profound sorrow” for the conditions uncovered and pledged to ensure his tenants receive quality accommodation. “I want every one of my tenants to have excellent accommodation,” he stated.

‘Ants are everywhere’

The investigation found that nearly half of the residents in one block of seven flats complained about persistent mould in their bathroom ceilings. One tenant described an ant infestation, saying, “The ants are everywhere.” Some residents reported threats of eviction when they raised concerns about these issues.

In response, Athwal acknowledged meeting with the property management company to address communication breakdowns and expedite repairs. He emphasized his commitment to being a “renters’ champion” and denied any knowledge of threats made against tenants.

Calls for Investigation

Andrew Boff, a Conservative member of the London Assembly, has urged the Labour Party and Redbridge Council to investigate the situation further. Boff pointed out that none of the seven flats in question have the required selective property licenses, despite Athwal having implemented this regulation during his tenure as Redbridge Council leader.

In 2018, Athwal had publicly criticized rogue landlords, stating, “Rogue landlords, we are coming for you,” following the council’s fines against a local landlord.

The situation has raised questions about Athwal’s management practices and adherence to housing regulations, prompting calls for further scrutiny into his property dealings.
