A 24-year-old Indian-origin Israeli soldier, Staff Sergeant Geri Gideon Hanghal, was killed in a vehicle-ramming attack near the West Bank’s Beit El settlement, according to community sources. Hanghal, who served in the Kfir Brigade’s Nahshon Battalion, was a resident of Nof HaGalil and had immigrated to Israel from northeast India in 2020. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Community and Political Reactions

The Bnei Menashe community, to which Hanghal belonged, expressed shock and grief at the loss. The community, which traces its roots to the ancient Israelite tribe of Menasseh, has seen significant immigration to Israel in recent years. Nof HaGalil Mayor Ronen Plot offered condolences, praising Hanghal as a “good, humble, and patriotic” individual.

Escalating Violence in the Region

The attack was carried out by Hayil Dhaifallah, a 58-year-old from Rafat, according to Israeli security sources. This incident adds to the escalating violence in the region, including attempted suicide bombings and shooting incidents linked to Hamas. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified counter-terrorism operations in the West Bank, with more than 70 airstrikes since October 7, targeting alleged terror cells. The violence has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with over 670 Palestinians reported killed by Israeli forces since the outbreak of conflict.

Ongoing Tensions and Concerns

The recent surge in violence, compounded by attacks from hardline Israeli settlers, has raised concerns about a potential broader conflict in the West Bank. The IDF has also conducted numerous arrests of Palestinians, including those linked to Hamas.
