Israeli Airstrike In Gaza Humanitarian Zone Kills At Least 19, Injures Dozens

In the latest escalation of the Israel-Hamas war, an Israeli airstrike hit a crowded tent camp in Gaza’s Khan Younis region early Tuesday. The Gaza Health Ministry, which operates under the Hamas-run government, reported that at least 19 people were killed, with the toll expected to rise as rescuers continue their search. The strike left large craters, some up to 10 meters deep, according to Civil Defense first responders.

Israel’s Justification

The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at a group of militants operating within the area. They used precision munitions and aerial surveillance to avoid civilian casualties. The military claims the militants were utilizing a command-and-control center in the zone, though Gaza’s Civil Defense disputes this, stating that only civilians were present.

UN Condemnation

The United Nations strongly condemned the strike. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the attack in a designated safe zone, calling the use of heavy weapons in populated areas “unconscionable.” He reiterated his call for a ceasefire and emphasized that international humanitarian laws must be respected.

Toll of the War

Since the war began, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 40,000 Palestinian deaths. However, the figures do not distinguish between civilians and fighters. The war, triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people, has displaced 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many multiple times.

Israel continues to face international scrutiny over its military actions, while Hamas denies any militants were present in the zone targeted on Tuesday.
