Brunei: Why Is It A Haven for Indian Professionals?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent visit to Brunei highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between India and the Southeast Asian nation. This connection has made Brunei an attractive destination for Indian professionals, particularly doctors and teachers.

Brunei, a small yet affluent country located on Borneo Island, offers several advantages for Indian expatriates. Its tax-free salary policy is a major draw, allowing professionals to enjoy a higher standard of living. Additionally, Brunei’s geographic proximity to India makes it easier to stay connected with family and friends.

The cultural similarities between India and Brunei further enhance the appeal of the country. Sanskrit-derived terms are used in the Malay language spoken in Brunei, and Indian cultural practices are reflected in local traditions. This shared cultural heritage helps Indian professionals feel more at home and integrate seamlessly into Bruneian society.

Finally, Brunei’s administrative and educational systems are influenced by British colonial rule, similar to India’s. This commonality makes it easier for Indian professionals to adapt to the working environment in Brunei. The familiar structures and processes in healthcare and education align closely with those in India, easing the transition and enhancing job satisfaction.
