Washington — Sept 23 — President Joe Biden has designated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a major defense partner of the United States, following discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This designation places the UAE alongside India as the only other nation recognized in this capacity, facilitating closer military cooperation through joint training, exercises, and collaborative efforts.
Focus on Humanitarian Aid and Ceasefire
During their meeting, Biden and Sheikh Mohamed called for “urgent, unhindered” humanitarian aid to be delivered to Gaza and expressed their commitment to achieving a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Biden highlighted ongoing concerns over escalating violence, especially following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that reportedly killed at least 492 people.
Cooperation on Global Challenges
The joint statement also addressed the UAE’s role in the conflict in Sudan, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the crisis, which has led to a significant displacement of people. Both leaders reaffirmed their plans to enhance cooperation in space exploration, clean energy, and artificial intelligence, with the UAE’s ambitious projects drawing interest from competing powers like China.
Vice President’s Separate Meeting
Vice President Kamala Harris met separately with Sheikh Mohamed, where she raised concerns about the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The White House reported her alarm over the millions displaced by the war and the atrocities committed against civilians by warring factions.
