The Gautam Budh Nagar traffic police announced on Wednesday that vehicle owners or parents could face legal action if minors are caught driving two-wheelers or four-wheelers in the district. This enforcement drive, which began on July 10 and will conclude on July 20, aims to crack down on underage driving and enhance the safety of children.
Anil Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stated that the directive to take strict action against underage drivers came from Lucknow. The initiative also seeks to prevent underage drinking. Traffic police are actively conducting checks outside schools and educational institutions in Noida and Greater Noida.
In a post on social media platform X, Noida Traffic Police stated, “Legal action is being taken as per rules by running a campaign against vehicles being driven by drivers below the age of 18 years and drivers violating traffic rules. Traffic helpline No. – 9971009001.”
A traffic police officer mentioned that under Section 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, vehicle owners or parents could be booked if minors are allowed to drive. Yadav added that strict actions could include filing an FIR, imposing a hefty fine of Rs 25,000, and suspending the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC) for a year. Additionally, the minor would be disqualified from applying for a driving license until the age of 25.
The Noida traffic police urged parents to prevent their underage children from driving. According to traffic police data, in 2023, the district witnessed 1,176 road accidents resulting in 470 deaths and 858 injuries.
