Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted on Monday that Rahul Gandhi’s prospects and the future of the Congress party in Assam appear bleak. Sarma stated that by 2026, the grand old party would diminish significantly in the state. He emphasized the association between voting for Congress and supporting Rahul Gandhi, contrasting it with the backing of Narendra Modi through the BJP.

Sarma highlighted a notable shift towards the BJP, with numerous Congress members and leaders defecting to join his party, including the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah, whom he anticipated would switch sides in early 2025. Sarma expressed confidence that more influential figures would align with the BJP, both preceding and following the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He likened the Assam Congress to a reserve resource, indicating that they could be enlisted as needed, particularly for Narendra Modi’s cause. Sarma concluded his remarks by affirming his party’s dominance in the political landscape, except for a few entrenched dynasties, signaling the ongoing realignment within Assam’s political sphere.
