Reportedly auctioned by Christie’s in 2019, Nita Ambani wore a sizable diamond ring titled ‘Mirror of Paradise,’ valued at $6.5 million according to its website. Dating back to the 1800s, this 52.58-carat piece was originally part of the Mughal empire’s collection, sourced from the Golconda diamond mines.
Delving into a bit of history, diamond mining in India is believed to have started around 400 BC, although the details of that era are somewhat unclear. Within the jewellery industry, the term ‘Golconda’ signifies the highest quality of diamonds, renowned for their natural purity. Among the most famous Golconda diamonds are the Agra Diamond, the Hope Diamond displayed at the Smithsonian, the Koh-i-Noor incorporated into the British Crown Jewels, the Darya-i-Nur located in Iran, and The Princie Diamond.
Ambani had previously showcased this baguette-cut diamond during the inauguration of NMACC (Nita and Mukesh Ambani Culture Centre) in March 2023. This particular piece underscores India’s rich tradition in crafting jewellery, highlighting the country’s exceptional skill and mastery in various forms of craftsmanship.
