There was no nightlife in Kashmir for three long decades as shops, restaurants and other establishments closed early due to the fear of Pakistan-sponsored terrorists and separatists.
However, the last three years have seen a revival of nightlife in Kashmir as terrorists and Pakistan henchmen, who were active in the Valley, have been put on hold and their ability to run a parallel system has been eliminated. The abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 paved the way for restoring the ancient glory of Kashmir.
The bold decision taken by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi completely integrated the region with the Union of India and ended the hegemony of anti-peace elements. As of today, activities continue till late night in the restive areas of the old city of Srinagar. Youth are playing football and cricket till midnight in floodlit stadiums. The dread and fear that used to prevail at the time of sunset has now ended.
Terrorists carrying guns and grenades are nowhere to be seen as security forces and J&K Police have cut them down to size. There are no longer grenade attacks or cross-firing. There is neither any closure nor incidents of stone pelting.
The common man has heaved a sigh of relief as the situation in Kashmir has returned to normal. He is doing his daily work in a peaceful environment. The revival of nightlife has resulted in business establishments staying open late into the night, increasing sales and profit margins of businesses.
The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has worked hard during the last three years to ensure that tourists do not have to lock themselves in hotels after 8 p.m. Shikaras and houseboats in Dal Lake are lighted up and many tourists can be seen taking their dream ride in Dal Lake during the night. All the lights on the Shikara are solar based and environment friendly.
Shikaras on the move shine like gems in the Dal Lake with their sparkling light. The move has increased the working hours of shikara owners, which means more business for them. Activities like Heritage Tour, Craft Exhibition, Night Skiing have added a new dimension to the nightlife of Kashmir. Hotels, restaurants and street food joints, which used to down shutters in the evening, remain open till midnight and these places are thronged by people.
