Twenty-two individuals lost their lives when a two-storey school building collapsed in Plateau state, central Nigeria, as reported by Sky News on Saturday.

According to a police spokesperson cited by Sky News, a total of 154 people were initially trapped under the debris. Fortunately, all except those who tragically perished were rescued and are currently receiving treatment for their injuries at various hospitals.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated in a Facebook post that thirty individuals remain hospitalized. Rescue operations have concluded, and the site has been cleared.

The incident occurred during school hours at Saint Academy, located in the Busa Buji community of Jos North district in Plateau state.

Building collapses are a recurring issue in Nigeria, attributed to weak safety regulations and the frequent use of substandard construction materials in Africa’s most populous nation.
