Veteran actor Salim Kumar dies at 56

New Delhi: National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar died at the age of 56 after being rushed to Amrita Hospital in Kochi on Saturday, according to the Kerala government. His death triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders, film personalities and fans.

His mortal remains were kept for public homage at Paravur Town Hall from 9 am to 1 pm on Sunday. The funeral will be held with official honours at his residence in North Paravur, Ernakulam. The state government has decided to bear the expenses related to the funeral and associated arrangements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the actor’s death, saying Salim Kumar had made a mark with his versatility and memorable performances across a wide range of roles.

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan described him as a cinematic legend and a personal friend, while Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan recalled his journey from a mimicry artist to a National Award-winning actor.

Actor Navya Nair remembered Salim Kumar as a kind-hearted person who spread happiness and made everyone laugh. Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh also expressed condolences and highlighted the actor’s association with the party.

A towering figure in Malayalam cinema, Salim Kumar built a career spanning more than three decades and over 300 films. He initially won audiences over with his comic performances before earning widespread acclaim for his dramatic roles.

He received the National Film Award for Best Actor for Adaminte Makan Abu and the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for Achanurangatha Veedu. He also earned recognition for Ayalum Njanum Thammil and his directorial venture Karutha Joothan.

Salim Kumar is survived by his wife, Sunitha, and their two sons, Chandu Salim Kumar and Aaromal Salim Kumar.
