At the G20 summit in Johannesburg, a key development took place in the fight against terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni introduced a Joint Initiative to improve cooperation on tackling terror funding. This highlights their commitment to shutting down the financial channels that support international terror groups.
The “India-Italy Joint Initiative to Counter Financing of Terrorism” stands as a firm diplomatic declaration as well as an action-driven plan. It highlights a shared intention to strengthen systems that detect, block, and dismantle the financial support of terror groups. Together, the two countries aim to use intelligence and regulatory tools to restrict terror financing. The initiative is focused on practical, cooperative steps rather than general commitments.
The leaders held a detailed meeting that covered a wide range of cooperation areas. Their discussion centred on strengthening ties in trade, investment, defence, and security. A key moment was the progress made on the Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025–29, which is expected to greatly benefit both countries and their citizens. They also agreed to push forward connectivity under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC) project.
The meeting placed clear emphasis on forward-looking sectors like innovation, AI, and space. PM Meloni backed India’s plan to host the AI Impact Summit in 2026, encouraging global collaboration on this fast-growing technology. This joint focus on digital and tech futures complements traditional ties, showing a partnership that is modern and evolving.

The agreements were supported by the evident personal connection between PM Modi and PM Meloni. Their interaction in Johannesburg, filled with friendly smiles and easy conversation, has become a talking point among diplomats. This chemistry, also noted at the G7 Summit and reinforced by PM Modi’s foreword in the Indian edition of Meloni’s book, is seen as helping deepen the India-Italy strategic relationship.
