Marufa Akter has recently ignited the flame of new chapters in the sports history of Bangladesh a story overbearing like no other resilience, raw pace and youthful brilliance at just 18, she has set cricket rate enthusiasts agog with a fiery storm-like bowling and unrivalled commitment. Marufa’s journey from the quiet fields of Nilphamari to the grand terrain of the international cricket system is just inspiring.

Who is Marufa Akter?

Marufa Akter born on January 1, 2005, and today she is a budding star in the field of women’s cricket in Bangladesh and she bowls right-arm medium-fast for the national team, she is a specialist bowler. A Fast, aggressive and furious with accuracy, all these earned Marufa recognition as one of the upcoming young pace bowlers in the world. She is inspired by the great all-rounder of India, Hardik Pandya.

Marufa Akter’s Education 

Marufa’s schooling has all been during her cricket career and she is a proud product of BKSP (Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan), Bangladesh’s premier sports institute. It was when she got into BKSP that she truly started getting into a structured training and coaching setup with national exposure as before it was mainly her schooling and helping her parents with their work at home she spent a lot of time practicing with borrowed gear in dusty fields.

Marufa Akter’s Cricket Career

Marufa in November 2022 joined Bangladesh’s first ODI squad against New Zealand for the T20I series a remarkable performance for her was given at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup when she left a notable mark with an impressive bowling line of three for 23 against Sri Lanka.

In July 2023 against India where she took 4 wickets for 29 runs and gave Bangladesh their first-ever win in ODIs against India that spell has bagged her the title of Player of the Match and forced her into the limelight.

Marufa Akter’s Family Background

Marufa is from Saidpur, a small town in rural India and her father Aimullah Haque is a sharecropper while her mother Morjina Begum is housewife and took care of five children. Their home was a small, thatched structure on land gifted by her grandfather and the financial constraints, society was not much supportive of girls in sports and they stood by her dream, particularly her elder brother who pushed her first to cricket.

Marufa Akter’s Training & Affiliations

Marufa has affiliation with BKSP and the BCB has contributed significantly to her growth and she has also represented several district and domestic teams, gradually moving up via local leagues before earning her national call. Her talent will continue to be nurtured by these institutions as her ambitions soar.

Marufa Akter: Awards & Achievements 

Marufa’s awards at this point would already testify to her immense potential and she was awarded the ESPNcricinfo Award for the Best Women’s ODI Bowling Performance in 2024 for her spell against India while in January 2024 she had already been nominated and is now the first Bangladeshi woman to win the award. In her early career statistics, she had 20 wickets from 25 ODI innings, telling of her capability to deliver whenever it is due.
