Indian cricket has set a fresh fitness benchmark with the introduction of the Bronco Test. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux have added it to the existing Yo-Yo Test and the 2-kilometre time trial. The new test shifts the focus towards endurance, not just gym strength. Originally created for rugby, the Bronco Test pushes stamina and cardiovascular limits. Its arrival reflects concerns that players, especially fast bowlers, were spending more time lifting weights than running. By combining all three tests, the BCCI now wants a complete fitness model that matches the modern game’s demands.

What is the Bronco Test?

The Bronco Test is a high-intensity aerobic drill that evaluates stamina, speed, and cardiovascular conditioning and it requires shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 meters. One set involves completing all three distances. Players must run five continuous sets without rest, covering 1,200 meters in total. The goal is to finish in under six minutes. Indian players have already taken the test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where it is under trial as a standard measure.

Why Le Roux Recommended It

Adrian le Roux, who rejoined the Indian team in June 2025, recommended the test and he previously worked with India between 2002 and 2003, and also with Cricket South Africa and IPL franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. According to reports, Le Roux noticed that Indian players, particularly fast bowlers, were not running enough. He argued that the Bronco Test would correct this imbalance by enforcing running-based endurance training.

How It Differs from the Yo-Yo Test

The Yo-Yo Test has been part of India’s routine since 2017, introduced by strength coach Shankar Basu under Virat Kohli’s leadership and it involves 20-metre shuttle runs with increasing speed and allows a 10-second recovery after every 40-metre run. Players need a minimum score of 17.1 to pass. The Yo-Yo Test checks interval recovery and agility, and in contrast, the Bronco Test focuses on continuous endurance both tests together provide a deeper measure of fitness.

2-Kilometre Time Trial

The 2-kilometre trial continues as another benchmark. Fast bowlers must finish it within 8 minutes 15 seconds. Batters, spinners, and wicketkeepers get 8 minutes 30 seconds and this test evaluates sustained endurance under timed conditions.

A Comprehensive Model for Modern Cricket

Now the BCCI has three main fitness tests—the Bronco, the Yo-Yo, and the 2-kilometre trial. Each test sets a role-specific benchmark and keeps players accountable. With the Asia Cup 2025 squad already picked, the focus on endurance has become even sharper. Gambhir and Le Roux want a system that matches the heavy physical demands of today’s cricket. The Bronco Test shows that India is serious about raising standards and preparing players for consistent, long-term performance.
