A scheduled tribute to deceased former Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was interrupted on Sunday during the Community Shield encounter between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley. The brothers died in July after a car accident in Spain, and both teams, as well as their officials, stood motionless ahead of kick-off in their remembrance.

But the moment was spoiled by boisterous voices from some part of the crowd, with others booing those who sought to keep the silence. Referee Chris Kavanagh had no option but to blow his whistle and bring the tribute to an earlier end than scheduled.

Tragic Accident in Spain

Diogo Jota, 28, and Andre Silva were killed when the Lamborghini they were driving hit the pavement and went up in flames near Zamora, northwestern Spain. The tragic loss stunned the football world, with condolences being poured in from across the globe.

Liverpool, where Jota played an important role in the team's attack during his stay at the club, has since retired his No. 20 jersey as an ongoing testament to respect.

Emotional Applause at the 20-Minute Mark

This Community Shield encounter was Liverpool's inaugural high-profile game since Jota's death. In a touching tribute, Liverpool fans started applauding in the 20th minute a reference to Jota's number. The applause was immediately replaced with loud cheers when new recruit Jeremie Frimpong scored a short while after, sending Liverpool 2-1 up at that moment.

Crystal Palace Seal Victory in Penalty Shootout

In spite of Liverpool's emotional boost throughout the match, Crystal Palace rallied to equalize the score and send the game into a thrilling penalty shootout. The Eagles won, claiming the Community Shield in an unforgettable encounter.

Jota's time at Liverpool was brought short, but his legacy is forever entrenched in the club and its fans. A tireless worker, a keen finisher, and humble off the field, he was a fan favourite whose impact spread far beyond his on-field performances. The Wembley applause and jersey retirement are a testament to the enduring respect and admiration he gained throughout his career.
