Leg-spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been included in Sri Lanka’s 16-player team for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025, to be played in the UAE from September 9. His return is a relief for the island nation as they seek to regain momentum from recent losses.
Hasaranga Back After Injury
Hasaranga, who has been nursing a hamstring injury he picked up while playing at home against Bangladesh, was not in the team that is touring Zimbabwe. The tour of Sri Lanka to Zimbabwe comprises two ODIs and three T20Is, but the selectors have preferred to give the brilliant all-rounder some rest so that he remains fit for the Asia Cup.
The 28-year-old has been a keystone of Sri Lanka’s limited-overs team, famous for his wicket-taking skills in middle overs and useful batting inputs lower down the order. His comeback is considered important to Sri Lanka’s tournament campaign.
Fresh Faces in the Squad
In addition to Hasaranga, Sri Lanka have named two young batters with big potential Kamil Mishara and Nuwanidu Fernando as a sign of youth and experience in the team. The two players have made notable domestic performances and will be hoping to make a name for themselves on the international field.
Along with Hasaranga, Sri Lanka’s spinning unit will include Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana, allowing the team a range of options to take advantage of UAE conditions.
Road to Redemption After 2023 Final Loss
Sri Lanka faced a difficult loss in the final of the 2023 Asia Cup against India, getting thoroughly defeated on home turf. This year, with Charith Asalanka as their captain, the side will be keen to test themselves in a strong Group B that includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.
Sri Lanka’s group stage schedule is as below:
- September 13: Bangladesh
- September 15: Hong Kong
- September 18: Afghanistan
The leaders of each group will advance to the Super Four stage.
