So, all throughout the day, starting since Monday, going through Sunday, we have constant patrols at all hours of the time, who are going in and around the city, just offshore, just showing presence, providing that security increase. We expect increased boaters, increased kayakers, so, we want to have that continuous presence. On the shoreside, we also have several Coast Guard members who are qualified in the LE capacity in more key critical infrastructure sites such as the Ferry Building, Pier 39, down Pier 80, along the Embarcadero doing patrols. So, we do those patrols in support of the large number of people, because over a four day period the city expects well north of 700,000 people. So, by showing a greater presence, we hope to deter any type of bad actor." 4. THE HAT OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD PACIFIC STRIKE TEAM 5. U.S. COAST GUARD PERSONNEL EXPLAINING DUTIES 6. It's down south, not really a maritime nexus. The important distinction that not many people understand is that all the events leading up to the Cerval are in the city of San Francisco. A lot of those events, concerts, media events, are along the waterfront. So, with that, it's a multi-fold approach where you need local law enforcement, you need fire department, you need state partners, national parks, you need FBI and other federal agencies to help support this large scale event." 7. Now the World Cup is more interesting, because it's not one distinct day or one distinct week. We're talking over multiple weeks. So, the planning for the Super Bowl and the FIFA has been mostly combined. But those have been going on since April and even beyond that. So, we're talking over a year planning and preparation for these large scale events." 9. VARIOUS OF U.S. COAST GUARD BOAT LEAVING 10. VARIOUS INSIDE THE U.S. COAST GUARD BOAT 11. SAN FRANCISCO SKYLINE WITH U.S. COAST GUARD BOAT IN THE WATER STORY: U.S. Coast Guard crews have stepped up patrols along San Francisco’s waterfront ahead of Super Bowl LX, as the city prepares for hundreds of thousands of visitors attending events tied to the NFL championship game. While the game will be played to the south at Levi’s Stadium, much of the week’s fan activity, concerts and media events are centered along San Francisco’s shoreline. “Our presence is multi-fold,” said Lieutenant Commander Eddie Kalankiewicz, enforcement chief for Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. He said patrols have been operating around the clock since Monday, with crews positioned just offshore and throughout the bay to manage an expected surge in boaters and kayakers. On land, Coast Guard personnel are also conducting law-enforcement patrols near key infrastructure sites, including the Ferry Building, Pier 39 and along the Embarcadero. Kalankiewicz said the operation involves close coordination with local police and fire departments, state authorities, the National Park Service, the FBI and other federal agencies. City officials expect more than 700,000 people to attend events over a four-day period. “By showing a greater presence, we hope to deter any type of bad actor,” he said. The Super Bowl presents a unique challenge for the Coast Guard, because the championship game itself is not tied to a maritime venue, Kalankiewicz said. “All the events leading up to the Super Bowl are in the city of San Francisco, and many of those events are along the waterfront,” he said, underscoring the need for security on both land and water. Officials say the operation is also serving as a rehearsal for a larger security effort later this year. San Francisco is set to host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins in June and spans several weeks. Planning for the two events has largely been combined, with preparations underway for more than a year. As fans gather this Sunday to watch the two teams compete in Super Bowl LX, authorities say lessons learned this week will help shape security for one of the world’s largest sporting events.
