A stunning piece of athleticism from the stands rivalled the on-field heroics during Australia’s 17-run win over South Africa in the first T20I at Marrara Oval. While Tim David’s 83 off 52 balls rescued the hosts from early trouble, 26-year-old fan Harry Gill became an overnight sensation with a spectacular one-handed catch in the crowd.
In the 12th over, David launched one of his eight towering sixes over deep square leg. The South African fielders could only watch as the ball cleared the ropes. But Gill, holding two cans of vodka in one hand, reached out with the other and plucked the ball from the air.
“I had a bit of time, but it was just coming straight for me. I was praying I didn’t drop it,” Gill said, speaking to The Age. “It just stuck. My hand is a bit sore this morning, but yeah, happy with it. My phone is blowing up.”

Gill, a pilot by profession, instantly became a talking point on social media, with videos of his grab spreading rapidly. He revealed that people he hadn’t spoken to in a decade had contacted him since the catch.
Brand Deal in the Making
Gill was wearing a cap from the fashion brand Good Day at the time. The company quickly reached out, promising him a lifetime supply of their products.

“We are serious about lifetime supply,” co-owner Tom Birmingham confirmed. “We’re going to fly him down to Sydney at the end of the year for our Christmas party.”
Tim David’s Match-Saving Knock
While Gill’s moment lit up the crowd, David’s batting lit up the match. Australia was reeling at 74/6 when he walked in. Combining clever strike rotation with explosive six-hitting, he smashed 83 from 52 balls. His seventh-wicket stand of 59 with Ben Dwarshuis pushed Australia to a fighting total of 178.

David’s innings also set up a record ninth consecutive T20I win for Australia.
In reply, South Africa faltered under disciplined Australian bowling. Josh Hazlewood’s spell of 3/27 included two vital wickets in the 15th over. Dwarshuis complemented him with 3/26 as South Africa were restricted to 161/9.
The win gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
