Srikkanth Backs Rohit Sharma, Warns BCCI Against Ignoring Experience For 2027 World Cup

Veteran India cricketer and chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has delivered a clear message to the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee to officially confirm Rohit Sharma’s position for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Srikkanth made his comments following Rohit’s brilliant show in the just-concluded ODI series against Australia, in which he was awarded the Player of the Series award.

Rohit Sharma’s Stunning ODI Comeback Against Australia

Having been replaced as India’s ODI captain by Shubman Gill earlier this year, Rohit’s career in the 50-over game had been at the center of hot debate. But the 38-year-old quelled his critics with a breathtaking show of form against Australia.

Rohit top-scored for India in the second and third ODIs with his display of class and composure. His match-winning 121 not out in the third ODI brought to the fore his signature fluency and timing, while his gritty 73 in the second game came under challenging batting conditions.

The revival of the Indian skipper not only ensured India’s series win but also re-established his role in the team’s long-run plans. His performances made many, including Srikkanth, demand his auto-selection in the team for the World Cup in 2027.

“Don’t Talk About Age” – Srikkanth’s Strong Words

Srikkanth shot down fears over Rohit’s age, stating fitness and performance alone should be the basis for selection. “Rohit is a sure pick for the 2027 World Cup. We cannot play without him and Virat Kohli,” he posted on his YouTube channel.

“Rohit has shed 11 kilograms and is looking super fit. It was the old Rohit Sharma out there — playing the ball late, timing beautifully, and fielding superbly. Don’t raise this age question. He’s fit, catching beautifully at slips, and batting effortlessly like in the 2019 World Cup,” Srikkanth opined.

Rohit’s revamped aggressiveness was also brought out by the former selection chief, praising his dedication to retaining the highest level of fitness at this point in his career.

Srikkanth’s Message To BCCI Selection Panel

The ex-India opener made it clear where he stands, giving a clear message to the Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee: “If I was the chairman today, I’d go to Rohit and Virat and tell them — just stay fit till 2027 and win us the World Cup.”

Srikkanth urged that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still India’s support system in one-day cricket and must be part of the plan till the next World Cup. The unbeaten 168-run stand between the two in the third ODI vs Australia just served to reinforce his viewpoint.

Rohit’s Revival A Positive Sign For India

Rohit Sharma’s return to form has been a huge morale booster for Indian cricket in the run-up to the 2026 Champions Trophy and the 2027 World Cup cycle. His experience of leading, his consistency, and big-match temperament still make him a vital cog in India’s ODI machinery.

According to a report, Srikkanth’s words show an emerging attitude of former cricketers that the BCCI has to support experience along with young players and Rohit’s recent performance may well have eased that choice.
