India’s star opener Smriti Mandhana has rewritten history books with yet another record-breaking performance. The 29-year-old became the fastest Indian male or female to reach 5,000 ODI runs, achieving the feat in just 112 innings, surpassing the legendary Virat Kohli’s record of 114 innings.

Mandhana crossed the milestone while playing her scintillating 80-run innings against Australia in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup match played at Visakhapatnam on Sunday. Her innings, peppered with classy cover drives and suicidal aerial strokes, again pointed to why she is the pillar of India’s batting order in white-ball cricket.

In the all-time global rankings, Mandhana ranks behind only Pakistan’s Babar Azam (97 innings) and South Africa’s Hashim Amla (101 innings) a select group that puts her in the class of contemporary greats.

Smriti Mandhana Scores 1,000 Runs in a Calendar Year

It wasn’t only the 5,000-run mark that made Mandhana’s innings noteworthy. The Indian vice-captain also crossed the 1,000-run barrier for the calendar year of 2025, the first ODI woman to achieve that feat. She started the day on 982 runs in 17 matches and went over the milestone in style, hitting Australian spinner Sophie Molineux for four, six, and four in an over that produced 16 runs.

With that stroke, Mandhana also surpassed Belinda Clark’s 970 in 1997 record the highest in a calendar year in women’s ODIs.

Smriti Mandhana’s Dominance vs Australia

Under attack from a strong Australian bowling lineup, Mandhana was in sublime form right from her first boundary off Kim Garth in the very first over. Her stand with Shafali Verma set the tone early on, and the left-hander went on dictating terms with her clean timing and intelligent placement.

The over from Molineux proved to be the highlight in a sequence of innings that displayed Mandhana’s flexibility and poise. From long drives over mid-on to well-directed pull shots, she disrupted the Australian rhythm and reasserted her status as one of the finest stroke-makers in world cricket.
