The ICC has made a landmark move by naming Rohit Sharma as the brand ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Announced at the schedule unveiling, it’s the first instance of an active player being chosen. The appointment follows India’s thrilling title win under his captaincy and his recent retirement from T20Is.
During the event in Mumbai, alongside teammates Suryakumar Yadav and Harmanpreet Kaur, Rohit's pivotal new role was confirmed. But what makes this appointment so special? The ICC revealed that no active cricketer has ever been appointed an ambassador for a world event before. In his address, Rohit expressed deep gratitude, stating, “It’s a huge honour to be an ambassador of an ICC event... I was just told that no active player has ever been announced as an ICC ambassador, so this is a big privilege for me." He also voiced hope to "create the same magic we created last year" with a new team.

Choosing Rohit Sharma highlights his huge impact and iconic place in T20 cricket. He remains the only cricketer to have played in all T20 World Cups since 2007. His legacy is uniquely decorated; he was a member of India's first T20 World Cup-winning team under MS Dhoni in 2007 and, 17 years later, captained the side to its second title in 2024. This makes him the first and only Indian to hold two T20 World Cup winner's medals, cementing his place in the sport's history.
Rohit Sharma's tenure as India's T20 captain concluded on the highest possible note.
