Tennis legend Roger Federer will make a much-anticipated return to the court at the 2025 Shanghai Masters. The 20-time Grand Slam champion confirmed on Sunday that he will participate in the “Roger & Friends” celebrity doubles event on October 10 at Qizhong Stadium.
The special exhibition match will blend tennis with entertainment. Federer will be joined by Chinese actor Wu Lei, martial arts star Donnie Yen, and former world No. 3 doubles player Zheng Jie, a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion.
In a promotional video, Federer said, “Hello, this is Roger, and I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters.”
He added, “Shanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game.”
First Appearance in Shanghai Since 2017
Federer’s return will mark his first on-court appearance at the Shanghai Masters since 2017, when he captured his second singles title at the tournament.

The “Roger & Friends” doubles will offer fans a rare chance to watch one of tennis’s greatest icons back in action, even in an exhibition format. The event is expected to draw huge crowds and celebrate Federer’s legacy in the sport.
Federer’s Recent Public Appearances
In recent months, Federer has made notable appearances at major tennis events. At Wimbledon, he attended Novak Djokovic’s fourth-round match, where fans gave him a warm ovation as he entered the stands with his wife Mirka. He wore the purple circular badge given to former champions of the All England Club.

Federer, who won his first Wimbledon title in 2003 and his eighth in 2017, also joined Djokovic and Andy Murray at Roland Garros earlier this year. Together, they paid tribute to Rafael Nadal, honouring the Spaniard’s extraordinary career and unmatched success on Paris clay.
Federer’s Return as a Boost for Tennis in Asia
Federer’s involvement is merely an exhibition, but his presence has wider implications for Asian tennis. For many years, the Shanghai Masters has been one of the area’s top competitions, drawing celebrities from around the world and increasing local interest in the sport.
Federer’s return is a major promotional highlight because of his history with the tournament, which includes two titles and a strong fan base in China. The “Roger & Friend” match, which combines sport and celebrity, is also anticipated to draw non-traditional tennis audiences, thereby broadening the game’s appeal.
His comeback in Shanghai could inspire a new wave of tennis enthusiasm across Asia, reinforcing the tournament’s role as a bridge between the sport’s elite and a passionate fan base in the East.
With Federer stepping back on the court, even in a light-hearted setting, the event promises both nostalgia and celebration — a perfect tribute to his lasting influence.
