In an emotional development for Indian cricket fans, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been ruled out of the 2025–26 Big Bash League owing to a knee injury.
The 39-year-old was set to make history as the first Indian male cricketer to play in the BBL, representing Sydney Thunder. But just weeks before his much-awaited debut, Ashwin’s injury has ended that dream at least for now.
Was This the BBL Debut Fans Were Waiting For?
Ashwin’s signing for Sydney Thunder was a moment that transcended cricketing boundaries. It wasn’t just about one player joining the league, it was a statement of how Indian cricketers were now expanding their footprint across global T20 tournaments.
Both Indian and Australian fans were most curious to see how Ashwin’s tactical mastery and experience would shape Thunder’s campaign.
But fate had other plans. Training in Chennai, Ashwin hurt his knee and underwent a minor procedure that required him to stay off travel and rest for some time. Thus, he had to withdraw even before the tournament began.
What Did Ashwin Say In His Heartfelt Instagram Letter?
The announcement came directly from the man himself. With an emotional letter first posted to Instagram and labeled for “Thunder Nation,” Ashwin informed his fans of the news.
“While preparing for the upcoming season in Chennai, I hurt my knee. I had a procedure and the outcome means I will miss BBL15. That is tough to say as I was genuinely excited to be part of this group and play in front of you,” he wrote.
Ashwin went on to thank the management, coaching staff, and fans of the Sydney Thunder for the warmth and support he received even before playing his first game.
“Since my first conversation with the club, I have felt nothing but warmth from Trent, the staff, players, and so many of you who have reached out already. Thanks for making me feel at home before a ball’s been bowled.”
He added that he would continue to cheer for both the men’s and women’s Thunder teams, with a hope of returning later in the season – “if the doctors are happy.”
Will Ashwin Return Later In The Season?
While Ashwin did not shut the door completely on his appearance in the BBL, he suggested in his note that if rehabilitation goes well, he might join the team later on in the tournament. At the same time, he also clarified that it is only intent and optimism with no promises.
The latest setback has come just months after Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL, heralding a new chapter in his cricketing journey. Sydney Thunder will start their BBL 2025–26 campaign on December 16 against Hobart Hurricanes and follow that up with the Sydney Smash on December 20.
Even though fans won’t see him on the field this year, Ashwin’s passion, humility, and love for the game continue to make headlines, reminding everyone why he is still one of India’s most admired cricketers.
