VARIOUS OF ANCIENT OLYMPIA IN SUNNY WEATHER STORY: Sunlight broke through scattered clouds over the Temple of Hera on Wednesday (November 26), reflecting in puddles of rainwater, as visitors walked around Ancient Olympia, where patches of mud were still visible in the stadium of the original Games despite the bright morning weather. At the nearby archaeological museum, preparations were underway to host the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics torch-lighting ceremony, which was decided to be held there instead of the ancient outdoor stadium due to bad weather. The torch is traditionally ignited using the sun’s rays and a parabolic mirror in an elaborate outdoor ceremony at the site of the ancient Games, with actresses playing priestesses and appealing to sun god Apollo for his help. But the area in the western Peloponnese has seen consecutive days of heavy rain, forcing organisers to change their plans. It is not the first time that the weather has affected the torch-lighting ceremony or its dress rehearsal but it is the first time in decades that the event itself has been moved to an indoor location.
