The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) gave a special tribute to former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar and cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar by unveiling their lifetime statues at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday (Aug 23).

The event also marked the opening of the new Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, which highlights Mumbai’s rich cricketing history and rare memorabilia donated by famous players.

Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum Opens at Wankhede

The new museum inside Wankhede Stadium celebrates Mumbai’s huge contribution to Indian and world cricket. It showcases historic collections, rare items, and personal gifts from cricketers who shaped the city’s cricketing legacy. Pawar, who has led the MCA, BCCI, and ICC, said he was proud to have his name on the museum.

“I am truly honoured to have this museum named after me. Mumbai’s cricketing journey – from its maidans to the global stage – is a story of talent, dedication and passion. This museum celebrates that rich legacy and the many unsung heroes who have worked behind the scenes to support and grow the sport. I hope it continues to inspire future generations to carry forward the proud spirit of Mumbai cricket,” he said.

Sunil Gavaskar’s Statue Unveiled

Sunil Gavaskar, one of India’s greatest cricketers, was also honoured with a statue at Wankhede. He already has a stand named after him at the stadium, but the statue gives fans another way to remember his greatness.

The statue shows Gavaskar’s look from the 1970s, with his round cap and raised bat. Gavaskar, who was a key part of India’s 1983 World Cup victory, remains an icon for young cricketers.

Speaking at the event, he said:

“I must say I’ve always considered myself a student of cricket history. In our playing days, there were no videos – only books and magazines. We learned from reading, from autobiographies, and from the written word. That’s why seeing this museum makes me genuinely happy. MCA has done a wonderful job, not just for Mumbai cricket but for Indian cricket as a whole. Young players who visit will find inspiration in the stories and history preserved here.”

In addition to inspiring the upcoming generation of cricket players, the museum and sculptures honour the city’s cricketing heroes.
