On Tuesday, the Maharashtra cabinet congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on creating history by winning their first ICC Women’s World Cup title.
The state government also approved a proposal to give cash prizes to Maharashtra cricketers Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Radha Yadav for their stellar performances in the global tournament.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the cabinet’s decision but did not disclose the exact prize amount. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, also saw Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar joining in applauding the trio’s contribution to India’s World Cup triumph.

Led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women’s team defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final on Sunday to clinch their first-ever World Cup title. It was a momentous moment for Indian women’s cricket, sending ripples of inspiration among millions across the nation.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a ₹51 crore cash reward for the players, support staff, and the national selection committee on Monday. “As a token of appreciation, the BCCI will reward the Indian women’s team with ₹51 crore for winning the World Cup,” said BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar.
What Role Did Jay Shah Play in the Growth of Women’s Cricket?
The BCCI also acknowledged the “pivotal role” played by Jay Shah, current ICC Chairman, towards strengthening women’s cricket in India.
During his stint as the Secretary of the BCCI, Shah initiated important projects like increasing domestic competitions, improving infrastructure, and starting elite competitions such as the Women’s Premier League.
The recognition by the Maharashtra government of its homegrown stars adds to the national celebration of India’s landmark triumph-a defining moment in the history of Indian women’s cricket.
