The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is ready to comeback with its sixth season between December 1 and 23, 2025, guaranteeing 24 days of high-octane T20 action the longest season in the history of the tournament. The longer calendar will make competition fiercer among the five franchises while also providing players with vital match practice before a significant cricketing year, as the tournament is a crucial warm-up for the 2026 Cricket World Cup.

Longest Season So Far: 24 Matches Over Premier Stadiums

The 2025 LPL season will have 24 matches, 20 of which will be league matches and four will be knockout matches. The matches will be played over three of the premier stadiums: R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo; Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy; and Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Dambulla. Cricket fans can anticipate fast and furious cricket with local and global stars competing to win.

Indian Cricketers to Feature for the First Time

Indian players will make their debut in the tournament for the first time, bringing a new level of excitement. Their names will be announced soon, but their participation is going to push competition higher and create additional hype among cricket fans in South Asia.

Tournament Director Discusses LPL’s Increasing Significance

Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director, LPL, stated, “The timing of this edition has been strategically selected to provide players with maximum exposure and quality match practice prior to a year of global cricketing. During the seasons, the LPL has become a hotbed of new talent, with numerous youngsters making their presence felt alongside international players.”. This year also, we are convinced the league will bring up interesting fresh names who will go on to surprise the world stage before the World Cup.”

Tournament Format and Playoff Structure

The tournament structure involves each of the five franchises playing twice in the league phase. The first four teams qualify for the playoffs:

  • Qualifier 1: Top two teams contest each other; winner directly qualifies for the final.
  • Eliminator: Third and fourth places; champion meets Qualifier 1 loser in Qualifier 2.
  • Qualifier 2: Identifies second finalist.

This guarantees a compelling finale in which all games matter.

IPG Group CEO Emphasizes LPL’s growth

Anil Mohan Sankhdhar, IPG Group Founder and CEO, commented, “The Lanka Premier League has evolved speedily as one of Asia’s most exciting T20 spectacles.”. As television viewership in the league topped 780 million and stadiums became full of fans experiencing best-class performances, the league hit the right note not just in Sri Lanka but also in major markets such as India, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Carrying forward that momentum, we firmly believe that the 2025 version will set the bar even higher, treating fans to an even grander cricket fest around the world.”
