As India get ready to take on South Africa in the first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, one question has dominated conversations: Will MS Dhoni be in the stands for the big game in his hometown? Stand-in captain KL Rahul addressed the excitement on Saturday, offering candid views while outlining the team’s mindset after the Test series defeat.

Will MS Dhoni Be in Attendance in 1st ODI?

When asked about the possibility of the legendary former captain showing up at the stadium, Rahul acknowledged that the team would be “more excited” than anyone else.

Rahul, who made his ODI debut under Dhoni in 2016 with a hundred in Harare, said playing in Ranchi naturally brought back memories of the iconic captain.

“If he comes to watch the match, not only the crowd, we will get more excited,” Rahul said. “Hopefully, we can play well and make him happy.”

India enter the ODI series looking to bounce back from a 2-0 Test defeat, and Dhoni’s presence – even from the stands – would add an emotional weight to the contest.

Where Will KL Rahul Bat Against South Africa?

Rahul also confirmed that he will continue at No. 6, a role that mirrors Dhoni’s own long-standing template of finishing games while keeping wickets.

“I’ve been at number six since the Champions Trophy. We’ll decide the final XI later, but I’ll continue in that role,” he said.

Depending upon team balance, the lower middle order from India could be Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy.

KL Rahul on Kohli and Rohit’s Return

Rahul underlined the importance of having senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma back in the ODI setup.

“Their presence makes the dressing room more confident. We all learn from how Virat rotates strike and how Rohit sets the tone, ” he said.

Rahul further mentioned that both the senior stars have been actively guiding youngsters ahead of the series.

What Does Jadeja’s Return Mean For India?

The ODI squad also sees the return of Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the Australia tour.

“Jadeja has done the job time and again. He was key in our Champions Trophy win with bat, ball and in the field,” Rahul said, calling the all-rounder’s experience “invaluable” for any captain.

KL Rahul on will Ruturaj Gaikwad get a Chance?

Ruturaj Gaikwad returns to the squad and Rahul confirmed that he will feature at some point.

“Rutu is top-class. Top order has been settled, but with injuries opening the door, he’ll get his chance,” Rahul asserted while underscoring that the team believes strongly in Gaikwad’s ability.

Who Will Keep Wickets: Rahul Or Pant?

Rahul wound up the presser with a clarification on the situation relating to wicketkeeping. “If Rishabh Pant is in the XI, he will take the gloves,” Rahul said. “He’s good enough to play purely as a batter too.”

India come into the opener with question-marks over the team combination, strike rotation, finisher roles and, of course, Dhoni’s attendance, carrying both expectation and motivation.
