England batsman Jos Buttler on Monday paid a heartfelt tribute to his late father, who died a week prior. His Instagram post weeks after he had a hard time out in The Hundred for Manchester Originals against Oval Invincibles on August 9 (Saturday).
Buttler shared a picture with his father holding the ICC World Cup trophy, which England won in 2019, captioned: “Rest in peace Dad, thank you for everything.”
Playing Through Grief in The Hundred
Among the sadness, Buttler played on Saturday for the Originals, where he was dismissed for a four-ball duck. On one of his most emotional performances, where the Manchester Originals captained by Phil Salt honored his father by sporting the black armband, Buttler could not leave a mark on the scoreboard after he mistimed his drive, watching the outside edge sail straight to Donovan Ferreira.
The dismissal left the Originals in trouble, losing two of their batters within a margin of four balls, both for ducks. Salt’s 41 from 32 assisted the side in setting a target of 129, which was never sufficient to threaten Oval Invincibles. Openers Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye contributed their respective fifties and crafted a 114-run partnership to assist the Invincibles in getting a win within 57 balls.
Tough Start to the Tournament for Buttler
Buttler has not gotten the best of beginnings so far in The Hundred. The No. 3 batsman was out for a mere 22 runs from 18 deliveries in the side’s loss against the Southern Braves in their inaugural match of the tournament.
Manchester are currently at the bottom of the table, having not managed a winning start. Oval Invincibles have won their first two games in the tournament. Manchester Originals’ next game is against London Spirits on August 11 at Old Trafford.
