Lionel Messi has given fans a strong hint that Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela on September 4 in Buenos Aires could be his last competitive game on home soil.

The 38-year-old football icon spoke to Apple TV after Inter Miami’s win over Orlando City in the Leagues Cup semifinal. He said the clash at the Estadio Monumental will carry deep personal meaning.

“Yes, it’s going to be special, a very special match for me because it’s the last qualifier game,” Messi told journalist Antonella Gonzalez.

Why This Match Matters

Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 35 points in the South American table. The result of the game won’t affect Argentina’s path.

But for Messi, the importance is not about qualification. It is about the possibility that this could be his final chance to play a qualifier in front of his home crowd.

The football legend revealed that his entire family will be present at the Monumental.
“My wife, my kids, my parents, my siblings, and as many relatives as possible from my wife’s side. We’ll experience it together,” he said.

No Official Retirement Yet

Messi has not formally announced retirement from international football. However, his words gave a strong feeling that the September 4 fixture could mark the end of his qualifier journey in Argentina.

“I don’t know if there will be a friendly or more games afterward, but yes, it’s a very special match,” he added.

He is also expected to feature in Argentina’s away clash against Ecuador on September 9, but that will not have the same emotional weight as playing in Buenos Aires.

The Legacy and What Comes Next

If this truly is Messi’s final home qualifier, it will close a golden chapter in Argentina’s football history.

Messi has already cemented his legacy from winning the Copa America in 2021 to lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Now, he may be eyeing an even greater feat — becoming the first captain to win two FIFA World Cups.

Fans across Argentina are preparing for an emotional farewell atmosphere at the Monumental. Social media is already buzzing with tributes, videos, and memories of Messi’s journey with the national team.

Closing of an Era

While nothing is official yet, Messi’s hint suggests that the September 4 clash could be remembered as more than just a qualifier.

It could be the last time Argentine fans watch their greatest icon compete in a World Cup qualifying game on home turf.

For millions of supporters, it will be more than football. It will be a night of history, family, and emotion — just as Messi himself described.
