New Delhi will be the venue for the next elite Badminton World Championships in August 2026, as the tournament back to India after 17 years. The Badminton World Federation announced Delhi New Delhi at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Championships in Paris on September 1, 2026.
This tournament, the 30th championships, will mark the first time the championships are staged in Asia after 2018. Indian authorities were keen and vowed to uphold their best that the latest Paris championships had demonstrated.
New Delhi To Host the Badminton World
The formal takeover occurred during the medal ceremony of the 2025 Paris World Championships men’s doubles, with Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty being on the podium with a bronze medal. BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, President Frank Laurent of the Federation Francaise de Badminton, and Badminton Association of India (BAI) General Secretary Sanjay Mishra were involved in the symbolic handover of hosting rights.

Mishra added, “We promise that India will give its best than 100 per cent to maintain and continue its standards which Paris has presented. We welcome the badminton family to Delhi.” The tournament will surely unite the best badminton players across the globe and thousands of fans in the capital. The 2026 championships will be the first to be staged on Asian soil since the 2018 tournament in Nanjing, China.

India’s Growing Badminton Legacy
This will be India’s second hosting of the World Championships, the previous one being in Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh 2009. Indian badminton has seen incredible growth on and off the court since then. The nation has produced several world-class talents who have made India a force to be reckoned with on the international badminton stage. P.V. Sindhu, India’s best-decorated shuttler, has five World Championship medals including gold won in 2019.
The men’s doubles pair of Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty continues to raise India on top profile, winning bronze at Paris championship in 2025 and continues to India’s run of winning a medal at each championship since 2011. Organising the event once again in India’s national capita, Delhi a testament to India’s capability to host large-scale international sporting events and a testament to its growing badminton fraternity.
The India Open’s promotion to a Super 750 status tournament further testifies to India’s rising profile in the badminton fraternity.
