Jasprit Bumrah delivered an outstanding spell of fast bowling, claiming 5 wickets for 74 runs on the second day of the third Test at Lord’s. His performance helped India bowl out England for 387 shortly after lunch. He dismissed key players including Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes, shifting the momentum firmly in India’s favour by reducing England from 251/4 to 271/7.
This was Bumrah’s 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, making him the Indian bowler with the most five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests, surpassing the great Kapil Dev. It also earned him his first spot on the famous Lord’s honours board.
Muted Celebration Sparks Curiosity
Although his performance was impressive, Bumrah’s lack of celebration after taking his fifth wicket surprised many. When he dismissed Jofra Archer, there was no smile, no pumped fist—just a quiet walk back to his mark.
Some believed he was frustrated by England’s lower order pushing the score close to 400, especially after an 84-run partnership between Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse. However, Bumrah later addressed this during the press conference.
He explained, “The reality is that I was tired. There was no happiness factor. I bowled for a long time on the field, and sometimes I get tired.”
He added, “I’m not 21-22 anymore that I’ll jump around. I’m usually not like that. I was happy that I contributed. Other than that, I just wanted to go back to my mark and bowl the next ball.”
Bumrah Dismisses Root for the 11th Time
Earlier in the day, Bumrah delivered a beauty to Joe Root, sending the ball in sharply to knock over the middle stump. This marked the 11th time he had dismissed Root in Test cricket. The five-for at Lord’s was his second in this series, with the previous one coming at Leeds.
Though rested in the Edgbaston Test to manage his workload, Bumrah’s return showed why he is India’s most reliable fast bowler, capable of swing, seam, and speed in all conditions.
India Ends Day 2 at 145/3
In response to England’s total, India put up a steady fight. They finished the day at 145 for 3 with KL Rahul unbeaten on 53 and Rishabh Pant on 19, who came in to bat despite suffering from a finger injury.
The innings got off to a shaky start as Jofra Archer, back in Test cricket after more than four years, removed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 13 in his very first over.
Karun Nair played a composed knock of 40 before Joe Root took a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss him. Shubman Gill, who had scored two centuries in the last Test, was out for just 16.
India Trails by 242 Runs with 7 Wickets in Hand
With seven wickets remaining and two set batters at the crease, India will look to close the gap on Day 3. Bumrah’s spell gave them momentum, while Rahul and Pant’s stand offers hope for a strong reply.
