A major NBA gambling scandal has taken a dramatic turn after LeBron James’ name was unexpectedly mentioned in connection with illegal betting schemes. Thirty-four individuals, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach and NBA Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former Cavaliers assistant Damon Jones, have been charged for alleged involvement in Mafia-backed sports betting and rigged poker games.

LeBron James himself has not been charged. Yet, his name surfaced due to his past association with Damon Jones, his former teammate in Cleveland. This raised public speculation and prompted a swift response from the Los Angeles Lakers.

What Exactly Involved LeBron?

According to The Athletic, Damon Jones allegedly used non-public information about LeBron for gambling purposes. He reportedly told a co-conspirator that James would sit out a February 2023 Lakers game against the Milwaukee Bucks. LeBron did miss the game, and the Bucks won.

Was LeBron involved?

No. A league source told The Athletic that LeBron James had no knowledge of Jones sharing his status. At the time of the leaked information, Jones was no longer working with the Lakers.

How Did the Lakers Respond?

Lakers head coach JJ Redick addressed the issue after practice, saying: “It’s obviously at the front of everyone’s awareness, given the last two years.”

Redick didn’t blame anyone but hinted at wider concern around betting issues in professional sports. The Lakers said they fully support LeBron and trust league investigations. As of now, LeBron James has not released a personal statement.

Who Has Been Charged and What Are the Allegations?

The FBI announced that the charges involve four of the five leading Mafia families, with what officials describe as “mind-boggling” amounts of fraud. The accused include:

  • Chauncey Billups – Portland Trail Blazers head coach
  • Terry Rozier – Miami Heat guard
  • Damon Jones – Former Cavaliers assistant, tied to LeBron’s leaked status

Other individuals in underground poker networks and illegal betting rings

Why is the FBI involved?

Because the schemes involved organized crime, illegal sports wagering, and financial fraud tied to Mafia families. Rozier’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, accused the FBI of seeking “misplaced glory” by staging a public arrest instead of allowing a quiet self-surrender.

What Does This Mean for LeBron and the NBA?

This is being treated as a hard news story with developing legal and ethical consequences. While LeBron has been cleared of wrongdoing, the incident raises key questions:

  • Can player injury or availability information be weaponized for betting?
  • Are leagues prepared to deal with insider gambling leaks?
  • Could stricter rules on player privacy be introduced?
