Young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel etched his name in Indian cricket history on Friday with a memorable maiden Test century against the West Indies. The 24-year-old reached 125 runs on the second day of the first Test, helping India post a dominant 448 for five at stumps. But beyond the numbers, it was his heartfelt tribute that made the moment unforgettable.

After raising his bat, Jurel saluted the Indian Army, dedicating his innings to their sacrifices on the battlefield. The gesture also honored his father, a proud veteran of the Kargil War.

“The celebration at fifty was for my father, and the celebration after the hundred was for the army. I always have respect for them for what they do on the battlefield,” Jurel said.

Jurel did an army salute after reaching his half-century, and after reaching his century, the youngster came up with a special celebration as a tribute to the Indian army and his father, who is a Kargil war veteran.

Jurel’s Journey to the Maiden Hundred

This was not Jurel’s first chance at Test glory. He had come close against England last year but fell short. This time, he showed composure and patience, even when stuck at 99. He finally reached the milestone with a classy four against skipper Roston Chase, marking a defining moment in his young career.

The dressing room erupted in applause. At the other end, Ravindra Jadeja smiled and clapped as his junior teammate celebrated in style.

Fifth Indian Wicketkeeper to Score Maiden Hundred vs West Indies

At just 24, Jurel joined an elite list of Indian wicketkeepers who scored their maiden Test centuries against the West Indies. This list includes Vijay Manjrekar, Farokh Engineer, Ajay Ratra, and Wriddhiman Saha.

His knock also made history for India in 2025. This was India’s third Test hundred by a wicketkeeper in a single calendar year, the most ever for the team. Globally, it stands joint-second behind South Africa’s record of four in 2013.

A Blend of Patience and Aggression

Jurel’s innings was not just about survival—it was about dominance. He combined sharp defense with fearless strokeplay. Fans witnessed his ability to sweep, cut, and drive with finesse, along with a towering six straight down the ground.

He eventually fell to debutant Khary Pierre, edging to Shai Hope. The dismissal ended his stay at the crease, but not before establishing him as India’s rising star in Test cricket.

Respect, Discipline, and Motivation

Speaking after his knock, Jurel credited discipline and hard work as his biggest strengths.

“It’s about the privilege; a lot of people remain with the squad. Even if I am not playing, I keep working hard so that I can deliver when there is an opportunity. It comes with discipline, and I keep myself motivated,” he said.
