The former South African fast bowler, Dale Steyn, has raised discussion before the India vs South Africa ODI series by naming a combined XI featuring players of both teams. On the eve of the first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, Steyn conceded that choosing a team from two strong sides was “tricky” as plenty of talent would be on display.

Steyn on Picking the Combined XI

Steyn said that it wasn’t easy to narrow it down. “Lots of fantastic players and surely someone’s going to miss out,” he said, underlining the depth both teams currently possess. With India’s top batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back in action, and South Africa fresh off a historic Test whitewash, selecting a balanced side was not without its complexity.

The selection also shows Steyn’s focus on balancing power hitters with seasoned finishers and bankable bowlers to see them through varying conditions, especially in a series that would serve as a precursor to the T20 World Cup 2026.

India vs South Africa ODI Series: Overview

Recently, India and South Africa finished off a two-match Test series, wherein the Proteas went on to win 2-0. The forthcoming three-match ODI series is crucial for both sides, not only as a means for players to showcase form but also in the context of upcoming discussions over selection pertaining to the World Cup.

India’s regular ODI captain, Shubman Gill, will not be a part of this series due to a neck injury from the Kolkata Test. KL Rahul takes over as captain and adds leadership experience and composure to India’s middle order.

For South Africa, confidence is high following the Test domination. Players like Quinton de Kock, Dewald Brevis, and Marco Jansen will look to carry their red-ball form into white-ball success.

Steyn shared his selection in a video circulated by Star Sports, choosing a mix of experience and youth. His picks include:

  • Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock as openers
  • Virat Kohli at three
  • Tilak Varma at four
  • KL Rahul at five and captain of India in the series
  • Dewald Brevis at six
  • Ravindra Jadeja, Marco Jansen, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Lungi Ngidi complete the XI

This gives seven Indian players spots in the eleven, reflecting India’s strength in white-ball cricket while including key South African match-winners.
