VARIOUS SCENES FROM SAN SIRO STADIUM, WHERE WINTER OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY WILL BE HELD STORY: Milan, the capital of Lombardy and a global centre for design, fashion and finance, is getting ready to co‑host the 2026 Winter Games, with the opening ceremony set to take place at the historic San Siro stadium on February 6. The iconic Piazza Duomo will house a major media hub, while the Sforza Castle is being transformed into a fan village with a giant screen to follow the events. Also, the neoclassical Arco della Pace will host one of the two Olympic cauldrons to be lit at the end of the opening ceremony. The Milano Cortina Olympics will run from February 6-22, 2026, with the Paralympics to follow in March. Competitions will span a large part of northern Italy, featuring 116 events across 16 Olympic disciplines in 13 venues. Milan will stage figure skating, ice hockey, short track and speed skating in a mix of newly built and revamped venues. Short track and figure skating will be held at the modernised Milano Ice Skating Arena in Assago, which now features a permanent rink. Speed skating and part of the ice hockey schedule will unfold inside the Milano Ice Park, a temporary complex built within the Rho Fiera Milano exhibition area. Ice hockey will also be hosted at the new Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, designed to serve as a multi‑purpose events space long after the Games. The 2026 edition will mark Italy's third Winter Olympics. Cortina first hosted in 1956, while the most recent Italian Games were staged in Turin in 2006. (Production: Alex Fraser, Matteo Negri)
