The BCCI will hold a high-stakes meeting between top officials, the selection committee, and the team management to outline a long-term roadmap that could significantly impact the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the national team, with the 2027 ODI World Cup already in sight. If reports are to be believed, then BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will meet in Ahmedabad after the third India vs South Africa ODI in Visakhapatnam next week.
The meeting is occurring at the most critical juncture, given that both Rohit and Kohli, now active only in the ODI format-have not spoken about their roles or futures with regard to the next World Cup cycle.
According to reports, the board believes that senior players of Rohit and Kohli's stature need clear communication on expectations and workload. "They can't just be playing with uncertainty," a BCCI insider informed TOI. The board reportedly wants Rohit Sharma to keep working on his fitness and performance while not reacting to speculation about his future outside.
The urgency also stems from the need to begin building a squad early for the 2027 World Cup, especially with India's ODI calendar set to become increasingly busier from January 2026.
Recent performances give a mixed signal. Rohit shone in the series against Australia in ODIs, emerging as the top scorer and the Player of the Series with 202 runs. Kohli, on the other hand, bounced back after two early dismissals with a 74 in the third ODI.
However, officials in the setup believe the duo appeared “rusty” at times. A source said, “One can’t afford that in every series.” With India eager for regular decent starts up front, both seniors are expected to bear the mantle of driving the innings to give momentum to the younger players.
Rohit Sharma's fearless approach during India's Champions Trophy triumph has set a template for the team's ODI intent. According to management sources, Rohit is expected to maintain the same aggressive style of play, especially during the power play.
"The conditions were tough in Australia, but it did look like he was avoiding taking risks. It's important he continues to lead by example," the source added.
Kohli too is expected to anchor the middle order while allowing younger talents to settle into their roles sans excessive pressure.
Both Rohit and Kohli are likely to be advised to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month in order to get back into rhythm and match-readiness. Increasing match time outside international cricket could help them fine-tune their form ahead of a busy 2026-27 cycle.
India's forthcoming ODI commitments include the ongoing series against South Africa, the series against New Zealand in January, and the all-important tour of England in July. The performances in these series may have a bearing on the long-term decisions of the selectors.
