The Asia Cup 2025 is only days away, but the tournament has already landed in controversy. Sony Sports Network, the official broadcaster, released a promotional video highlighting the much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash on September 14. The promo featured India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Pakistan’s fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, and former Indian star Virender Sehwag.

Instead of excitement, the video sparked outrage online. Fans criticised the broadcaster for focusing on the rivalry at a time when emotions remain high after the April 23 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Many users demanded a boycott of both the Asia Cup and Sony Sports Network. Some even questioned the involvement of the BCCI and Sehwag in the campaign.

Fans Question Timing of India-Pakistan Rivalry Focus

For years, cricket between India and Pakistan has been more than just a sport. It carries political and emotional weight. Fans argued that promoting the clash in such a dramatic manner was insensitive. “This is not the time for hyping India vs Pakistan when the country is still mourning,” one user posted.

The backlash shows how cricket often reflects wider public sentiment. While fans eagerly await the clash on the field, the build-up has highlighted the deep divisions and sensitivities surrounding the rivalry.

A New Era for Indian Cricket

Apart from the controversies, Team India is embarking on a new journey with the Asia Cup 2025. India will participate in a big multi-national T20 event without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the first time in more than ten years.

Both legends retired from T20Is earlier this year after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Suryakumar Yadav now leads a youthful squad. This tournament will be a real test of how the next generation handles pressure, especially against Pakistan.

Group Stage Challenge

India is placed in Group A with Oman, UAE, and Pakistan. Group B includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka. India’s first match is against the hosts UAE on September 10 in Dubai. The high-profile clash against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14 at the same venue. India will then face Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

The team will be aiming to start strong and secure a qualification for the knockout rounds. For the young players, this is also a chance to establish themselves as permanent fixtures in the squad.

Cricket and Emotions Intertwined

In the region, the Asia Cup has always been more than just a cricket competition. The current promo issue demonstrates the close connection between national emotions and athletics. Soon, attention will turn to the players on the field while supporters continue to argue over the television campaign.

India's voyage without Rohit and Kohli will be widely observed, and the match between India and Pakistan on September 14 will continue to be the most talked-about topic, both within and outside of cricket.
