West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League ahead of the mini auction scheduled for December 16, 2025. Russell's exit marks the end of an era for the Kolkata Knight Riders, who he had grown into one of the most iconic and influential figures in the franchise's history.
"Hanging up my IPL boots. but not the swagger. What a ride it's been in the IPL 12 seasons of memories, and a whole lot of love from the KKR family," Russell posted on Instagram.
Russell joined KKR in 2014, and almost immediately, he was a match-winner. With his explosive hitting, fearsome bowling in the death overs, and electric fielding, he became synonymous with KKR's identity in the IPL.
With over 133 appearances for the franchise, Russell helped KKR secure two IPL titles in 2014 and 2024, delivering some of the most memorable performances in the league's history.
Explosive Batting: Russell was an instant game-changer with the bat, especially in terms of taking the game away in the final overs. His signature six-hitting ability kept fans on the edge of their seats season after season.
All-Round Impact: Russell was just as lethal with the ball, providing key wickets in death overs, whereas his fielding, athleticism, and energy made him one of the most complete T20 all-rounders.
Big-Match Player: For playoff matches and high-intensity situations, Russell was the man. His ability to swing games all by himself made him a crowd-pleaser and a nightmare for opposition teams.
Russell's final season of the IPL in 2025 was far from his best. He scored just 167 runs in 13 innings and picked up eight wickets, conceding nearly 12 runs per over. Yet, his legacy was beyond being affected by one poor season, given the innumerable match-winning performances he had turned in during his career.
KKR retained Russell for Rs. 12 crore ahead of the previous mega auction, but after his disappointing season, the franchise decided to release him ahead of the mini auction.
2014 IPL Title: Russell played an important role in KKR's first-ever IPL title, producing pivotal performances in key matches of the season.
2024 IPL Title: A decade later, Russell helped KKR clinch the championship once again, proving his enduring value and influence within the team.
Iconic Moments: From his six-hitting feats to clutch wickets, Russell has been central to some of the IPL's most memorable finishes and KKR's defining moments.
Andre Russell has had an IPL career littered with explosive performances, game-changing feats and records showcasing his all-round dominance, especially for the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise. Here's a snapshot of his key records:
Russell's records reflect his ability to single-handedly turn games, his destructive power-hitting, and his unmatched utility as a genuine all-rounder, making him one of the most feared and respected players in IPL history.
Although Russell is retiring from playing, he will remain with KKR in a new role as the Power Coach for the 2026 season. "And the best part? I am not leaving home… you will see me in a new role in KKR's support staff, as the POWER COACH of 2026," Russell added.Â
The experience he gained, especially in finishing matches and handling pressure situations, will now be passed on to the next generation of KKR players.
