Ahmedabad is confirmed to be the official recommendation as the proposed city for the Commonwealth Games 2030, making it potentially India’s second time hosting the games. This announcement by the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport was shared by Home Minister Amit Shah on his X account, who called this “A day of immense joy and pride for India,” before giving the complete credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The opportunity to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a big deal for any country, as the games will mark the 100 years of the games, which are held once every four years. The games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.

Significance of Ahmedabad Hosting Commonwealth Games 2030

Ahmedabad’s recommendation is a result of a thorough assessment of all the potential host cities. The announcement by the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport implies that Ahmedabad fulfils all the criteria to become the host of the Commonwealth Games 2030. The criteria include technical ability, athlete exposure, infrastructure, governance, and adherence to Commonwealth values.

As of now, Ahmedabad is not confirmed to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 and is limited to being an official recommendation as of now. The confirmation will come after the formal voting at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, which is scheduled to take place on 26 November 2025.

The confirmation will make Ahmedabad the second Indian city to host the games after New Delhi in 2010. It will also be another addition to the list of games that the city has hosted, and is proposed to host, including the Olympic Games in 2036.

PT Usha & Amit Shah React to India Hosting Commonwealth Games 2030

PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, described the announcement as an “extraordinary honour” and called the 2030 Games a powerful opportunity to inspire Indian youth, strengthen partnerships, and shape a shared Commonwealth future.

Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, tweeted: “A day of immense joy and pride for India. Heartiest congratulations to every citizen of India on Commonwealth Association’s approval of India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad. It is a grand endorsement of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s relentless efforts to place India on the world sports map.”
